Immediate Sound
in Bob Mehr's Reader The Meter
The Immediate Sound Series is thrilled to present three sets of improvised music that rests outside the world of jazz, and more in the realm of electro-acoustic, noise or drone.
Set I – Kicking off this special evening will be a rare solo set by Chicago’s reining scientist of the electronic keyboards: Jim Baker (ARP synthesizer and electronic keyboards). He is one of a handful of musicians who have a full grasp of the ARP synthesizer, and this performance will focus on his special approach to a most unique instrument. 2005 saw the long awaited release of his own solo record on Delmark entitled “More Questions Than Answers”, which was received by critics and fans alike. Baker is a first call player for visiting improvisers, having worked with Veryan Weston, Paul Lytton, Tristan Honsinger, Magnus Broo, and Cor Fuhler just to name a few.
Set II – Continuing the evening will be the long awaited Immediate Sound Series presentation of TV POW, which features Todd Carter (electronic instruments), Brent Gutzeit (electronic instruments), and Michael Hartman (electronic instruments). This trio of composers and free improvisers was first organized in Tokyo in 1995 by Hartman and Gutzeit. Later, they were joined by Carter when the group moved to Chicago in 1996. They employ samplers, percussion, invented instruments, synthesizers, turntables, tape manipulation, computers and multi-speaker surround-sound systems in their constantly evolving soundscape of sparkling electronics, ambient drones, minimalist techno, and cinematic field recordings. TV Pow has toured throughout Japan, Europe, and the United States and released many records in various formats in their 13 year history.
Set III – Closing out the evening will be the second-ever duo performance by Robert A.A. Lowe (voice & electronics) and Michael Zerang (percussion). Fans of innovative music will know Lowe as the former bassist of 90 Day Men and from his solo project Lichens. As Lichens demonstrates, he is capable of creating an otherworldly and overwhelming amount of sound through the use of wordless vocal loops, electronics, and acoustic guitar. This unique duo picks up where Lichens leaves off, pairing it with the wholly original soundscape that Zerang has invented for his performances of jazz and improvised music with countless ensembles. Not to be missed!!!
